A little bit about lampwork beads and why they are so special…

Lampwork beads are handcrafted glass beads created using the ancient art of lampworking. In this process, colorful glass rods are melted using a torch, and the molten glass is wound around a steel rod to form the bead. The bead is then embellished with various techniques and materials to create unique designs.

The term “lampwork” comes from the early use of oil lamps as the heat source in this technique. While modern torches are used today, the name still honors this historical method.

To ensure the beads are strong and durable, they are cooled in a kiln, where the temperature is precisely controlled. This process, called kiln annealing, involves heating the beads to a high temperature, allowing the glass to evenly heat, and then gradually reducing the temperature over several hours. This slow cooling process strengthens the beads, making them durable and long-lasting.
