A little about lampwork beads and why they are so special…
Lampwork beads are meticulously handcrafted from glass, a process that dates back centuries. Using a torch, colorful glass rods are melted to form molten glass, which is then wound around a steel rod to create the bead’s shape. Once the base bead is formed, various techniques and materials are used to embellish and decorate the bead, creating a unique and personalized item.
The term “lampwork” originates from the old method of heating glass with an oil lamp, giving rise to the name. Although modern lampworking now uses torches, the process still closely mirrors those ancient traditions.
To ensure durability and avoid stress or cracking, beads are cooled in a kiln, where the temperature is carefully controlled. This process, known as kiln annealing, involves gradually reducing the temperature after the beads have been heated. This careful, slow cooling strengthens the beads and ensures they will stand the test of time.
