A little bit about lampwork beads and why they are so special…
Lampwork beads are handmade glass beads crafted through a centuries-old process called lampworking. In this process, colorful glass rods are melted using a torch, and the molten glass is wound around a steel rod to form the basic shape of the bead. Once the basic bead is formed, it is embellished with various techniques and materials, making each bead unique and one-of-a-kind.
The term “lampwork” comes from the historical use of oil lamps as the heat source during the beadmaking process. Although modern torches are used today, the name “lampwork” continues to honor this traditional method.
To ensure the beads are strong and durable, they are cooled in a kiln, where the temperature is carefully regulated. The beadmaker “soaks” the beads at a high temperature to ensure even heating, and then gradually reduces the temperature over several hours to bring them to room temperature. This process, known as kiln annealing, makes the beads both strong and long-lasting, ready to be used in your jewelry designs.
