A little bit about lampwork beads and why they are so special…
Lampwork beads are handmade glass beads crafted using a centuries-old technique called lampworking. In this process, colorful glass rods are melted with a torch, and the molten glass is wound around a steel rod, forming the basic bead shape. Once the basic bead is formed, it can be embellished with various techniques and materials to create a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
The term “lampwork” originates from the traditional use of oil lamps as the heat source. While modern torch methods are now used, the name “lampwork” continues to honor that historic heating process.
To ensure that the beads are strong and durable, they are cooled in a kiln with closely regulated temperatures. This process, called kiln annealing, involves soaking the beads at a high temperature to ensure even heat distribution, followed by several hours of gradual cooling. The result is a strong, durable bead ready for use in your designs.
